Week 15

Posted Mon Jan 13, 2014 - 03:14 PM

The Hawks have clinched a playoff spot with a 5-1 victory over the Omegas in the early game.
The Omegas got on the scoreboard first when they scored a goal in the first two minutes of the game. Unfortunately for the Omegas, this was the only goal they were able to score in the game. The Hawks managed to tie it up by the end of the first. They added two more in the second period, and finished it off with two more in the third.
Rob Nutma is the Player of the Game. He scored twice for the Hawks and added an assist.

The middle game went to overtime, and saw the Stars beat the IceDogs 3-2.
It was close all the way through. The Stars scored first, but the IceDogs countered and the teams went into the second tied 1-1. The Stars scored the lone goal in the second, and the IceDogs scored the lone goal in the third to send it to overtime.
In overtime, Jason Hotke scored a short-handed goal to give the Stars the win. We'll give Jason the Player of the Game for scoring this big goal.

The late game saw the Cattle Barons let one slip away from them. The Flyers came away with a 4-2 win over the Cattle Barons.
The teams went scoreless until the Cattle Barons got on the scoreboard half-way through the second period. The Flyers tied it up at ones by the end of the period. Half-way through the third, the Cattle Barons regained the one goal lead. The Flyers tied it up again a few minutes later with a powerplay goal. It looked like we might go to overtime, but with 1:39 to go in the third, Mark Groendyk scored for the Flyers to give them their first lead of the game. The Flyers added an empty netter a minute later to seal the deal.
We'll give the Player of the Game to Mark Groendyk for scoring the game winner for the Flyers.
With this loss, the Cattle Barons have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention this season.

Unused Players

This is just a warning that we are coming up to week 15 of the season. This means that any players who have not played at least one game after the 15 game mark, will be taken off the rosters, and they will not be eligible to play for the rest of the season.

Week 14

In the early game, the Omegas beat the Cattle Barons 8-6.
The Cattle Barons started off quickly by taking advantage of the fact that the Omegas started the game without a goaltender. The Cattle Barons went up 2-0 after the first couple of minutes in the game. After that, the Omegas kicked it into high gear. They scored five goals while they were playing with six skaters. Mike Ward came in to fill in as the Omegas goalie with one minute to go in the first period. By the end of this wild period, the score was 5-4 in favour of the Omegas.
The Omegas scored two more goals in the second period and held a 7-4 lead going into the third.
In the third, the Cattle Barons mustered two goals of their own to bring it to within a goal. They pressured to tie it up, but an empty netter by the Omegas with 29 seconds to go killed the chances for the comeback.
Lance Ross had a three point game for the Omegas. Trevor Benjamins had four points for the Cattle Barons. One of the choices to get the nod for the Player of the Game is Jeff Vanderdeen, of the Cattle Barons. Jeff scored a hat-trick. The other choice is a strange one, but we'll give it to the Omegas' empty net (no offense to Mike Ward). After having two quick goals scored into their empty net, the Omegas picked up their own pace and frustrated the Cattle Barons while the Omegas' net was empty.

The middle game saw the Flyers beat the IceDogs 4-0.
Kev Karelsen got his first of two goals for the Flyers half-way through the first period. The Flyers scored twice in the second period, and rounded out their scoring with their final goal in the third.
Flyers goaltender, Rick Jones is the Player of the Game in this one. He is the first to earn a shutout so far this season.

The late game was an exciting one all the way through that saw the Hawks & Stars settle for a 5-5 tie.
The Stars had a good first period and held a 3-1 lead going into the second. In the second, the Hawks scored three straight goals, and held 4-3 lead by the end of the period.
The third period was really wide open with both teams getting plenty of scoring chances. Mike Ward & Dave Noorloos both did all they could to keep their teams in this game.
With just under five minutes to go in the third, the Stars scored to tie it up at 4-4, but a minute later, the Hawks scored again to regain the one goal lead. The Stars pulled the goalie with a minute to go, and they were able to tie it up again with 51 seconds to go in the period.
The teams went to overtime and both gave it their all to end it, but both goalies made huge saves in overtime.
Kyle Huizinga & Chris Helps each had three points for their respective teams, but the Player of the Game is Curt Moesker. Curt had four points, including a hat-trick for the Stars.
